At Daymar College, we focus on giving our students an opportunity to work toward a better life through education. With faculty and staff who dedicate their time to encouraging students, each class taken and connection made provides you with more power to create the future you want. We are grateful for the helpful faculty and staff, and the dedicated students who make Daymar so great.
We had a chance to talk to one of our faculty members, Delicia Cousin, to hear about her commitment to encouraging students:
What do you like best about being a member of the faculty at Daymar?
I get to know my students and learn about them, that way I know what I need to do to help them succeed. Take the time to get to know your students, allow your students to know that you have an interest in them. It shows them that you care about their success. You never know, you may be the only one they have standing in their corner.
How do you provide support to your students?
I assist with one-on-one tutoring and encouraging students. I became passionate about encouraging students because of my professor, Mrs. Theresa Parfait-Bryant. She took the time to be passionate enough to push me and encourage me throughout my time in college to succeed! With that being said, I know what encouragement can do for someone.
How does a degree from Daymar help people accomplish their goals?
It provides the opportunity for a fresh and new start in life. Students have the ability to accomplish a goal with support. I tell them it's not going to be easy. If it was, everyone would be doing it! I ask each student what their ultimate goal is. I let them know that they can do it, and I am going to be checking in on them the whole way. They know that I expect the best from them because I'm going to give them my best, and they are going to be the best! When they leave, they will have my thumb print on their back, and I can't send out anything but the best!
Do you have any advice for someone who is thinking about going back to school?
You will never know that you can achieve until you try. You are never too old and it is never too late for a new beginning! For most students that come into my program, it is their first time experiencing college. A lot of them are looking to start something new and fresh. They have experienced things in their lives that may have made them believe that they couldn't go to college. So, I tell them when they come into the program as a new student that this is their chance at a fresh start. It is the beginning of their new career. It is a chance to start over!
What is your proudest accomplishment?
Graduating from college, working in my field and, in return, giving back. Being able to help others accomplish their goals and succeed.
If someone is telling the story of you, what’s the number one thing the listener to know about you?
I am a true friend to whomever I choose to let in my life! I have loyalty.
Do you have a tip that could help the students taking your classes?
Always have the willingness to learn new things. Be open minded. Study and retain what you learn. You will always use what you have learned in class in the field some way. When studying, find a nice quiet place where you won’t be interrupted. Always study in a chair or at a table or desk, never in the bed because you will be too comfortable and fall asleep!
